When Smartsheet is the better choice

Choose Smartsheet if your team thinks in spreadsheets, needs Gantt charts and automations now, or already runs other projects in it and wants the HR rollout alongside them.

What Smartsheet is

Smartsheet is spreadsheet-style project tracking. If you can describe your project as rows and columns, you can build it there. It is a mature product with Gantt charts, automations, integrations and a large template library. Its HR solutions page covers recruiting, benefits tracking, employee onboarding and resource management.

Where Smartsheet is stronger

  • Flexibility. A sheet can hold any structure you design. HRjects has a fixed set of seven workspaces.
  • Scheduling. Smartsheet has Gantt charts. HRjects has a phase timeline and a board, with Gantt and dependencies planned.
  • Automations and integrations. Smartsheet has them. HRjects has none today.
  • Track record. Smartsheet is established. HRjects is in preview and has no SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certification.

Where HRjects is different

HRjects starts with the shape of an HR system rollout, so you do not design it:

  • Four phases, each ending in a gate with HR exit criteria. Ticking a criterion records who ticked it and when.
  • Current-state steps beside future-state steps for processes such as hire to onboard and the payroll run, with gaps that become tasks in one click.
  • A parallel payroll tracker that checks each run's net-pay variance against a tolerance.
  • A weighted readiness checklist that gives a Go or No-go, and will not show Go while a critical issue is open or a payroll run is outside tolerance.

When we checked its HR pages and template gallery on October 8, 2026, we found nothing specific to HR software implementation, such as phase gates with HR exit criteria, current-versus-future process maps tied to tasks, parallel payroll tracking or a go-live readiness score. That is what we found on those pages on that date, and the product may be able to do more.

You could build much of this in Smartsheet with sheets, formulas and some discipline. The question is whether you want to spend the first weeks of the project building the tracker.

Price

Smartsheet lists Pro at $9 per user per month billed annually, with a maximum of 10 members, and Business at $19, which starts at 3 members and includes unlimited free guests. Enterprise pricing is custom. HRjects is free during the preview. Its Team plan is planned at $15 per editor per month billed annually, with Contributors and Guests free, and is not on sale yet.

Which to choose

Choose Smartsheet if your company already uses it, if you need Gantt charts and automations now, or if the HR rollout is one of many projects you want in one place. Choose HRjects if the rollout is the main event and you want gates, process maps, payroll parallels and a readiness score ready on day one. See the HRIS implementation page for what a project looks like.
